Another Smart Woman Makin' News

She's young, gifted, and composed. She kicked the shit out of the competition at the PGA John Deere tournament this weekend and she's only 15! USA Network followed her all the way through her 18 holes today. Unfortunately, she missed the cut by 2 holes. We'll be seeing a LOT more of Michelle Wie in coming years.

You know, I'm conflicted about Wie playing with the men. I think her attempt to make the cut is more impressive than Tiger's first attempts (he was 16 at the time), and I believe she will be a force in golf very soon. However, I think the mental strain of the event (her age the cause) showed during the last few holes when she went from definitely in to out. The tournament used her as a publicity gimmick; everyone talked about the lower-tiered tourney while she was in, but no talks about it now that she's out.

I'd like to see her dominate the women's game before worrying about trying to make men's cuts. She remains a true talent with potential coming out of her ears, but she needs to work on her short game--having missed a 10 foot eagle put and having trouble getting close to the pins--and begin to control the female tour (and begin to overtake Annika Sorenstam). Once she does this, then I think she should begin to look to make the men's cuts. Why add that much more pressure? Especially when she can't even drive yet!

Is it a bad thing that Grace has her own set of golf clubs at the age of 22 months. Only three clubs but they are real... not the plastic kind. Her and her dad have a great time hitting balls in the back yard.

For those who don't know why Wie is at the John Deere Classic (played only an hour from my home town and I use to work it in the summer) every sponsor gets to invite one person to play. I don't know who her sponsor was but they wanted her there. It isn't so much that she wanted to play with the guys, BUT JEEZ go play if you are invited. Way back when Tiger was 19 her played the classic and got in some trouble for going to the gambling boats.

Golf-like who really cares...? It is a GAME for god's sake! How about horse shoes? Now that's a real sport and there's no cart!
