Cashing In on Tragedy

In a quick internet review, I see that Oprah and Dr. Phil are serving their advertisers by offering coverage of Hurricane Katrina this week. Dr. Phil even says he will be reuniting families!

And in Houston, the New York Times reports plenty of our favorite corporations are already making a killing (so to speak) including Halliburton. Funny, if the President hadn't been so busy making sure Halliburton made even MORE profits in Iraq, adequate funds might have been available for reconstructing those levees.

And while corporations fiddle, Americans are melting down. If you really want to understand the great divide in the South between the Haves and the Have-Nots, you need to read this story from yesterday's New York Times about two families who had to evacuate. Neither scenario is pretty, but to paraphrase Lou Reed, "If you are poor in America: fuck you"

And as they fatten up their moneybags, corporations are doing the same to us.
